How to track your menstrual cycle

Here are some tips on how to track your menstrual cycle. It’s not rocket science, but it is important to record the right information at the right time, to help you tune in to your own experience of your cycle. Try and chart diligently for 3 months to get to know your cycle really well!

The chart (below) is an example of one way how you can monitor track your menstrual cycle! Use your chart, or own method, in whatever way you feel is valuable and easy to input and interpret. You can also use separate sheets of a notebook, a calendar or a digital app – whatever works for you, as long as you can easily record data and look back over it each month.

If you are using this chart to track your menstrual cycle…

  • For your period (when you are bleeding) you could use a different number of dots to indicate heaviness of flow, or just use the words ‘light’, ‘moderate’ and ‘heavy’.
  • For sleep you could use a ‘red, amber, green’ colour chart (for bad, OK, great night’s sleep).
  • For life you could indicate an overall ‘life stress’ score, using a ‘red, amber, green’ colour chart (for bad, OK, great) or you could write a word to describe life right now (like busy, lots of work, training hard, not training, on holiday etc).
  • For feelings, you can write words here to describe your emotions and how you feel.
  • For symptoms, write words which describe any physical symptoms you may be experiencing.

Some questions to ask yourself

  1. Do you feel good in yourself, or is being you hard on certain days? What feels easy, what feels hard?
  2. Do you want to be with others, or on your own?
  3. What’s your energy, libido, sleep and appetite like?
  4. What needs do you have; emotionally, physically, spiritually, and practically?
  5. What is your experience of yourself, and the quality of your relationships?
  6. Who are you at ovulation?
  7. Who are you at menstruation?
  8. How does the world react to you at different times of your cycle, and how do you feel about that?
  9. Are you drawn to particular activities at certain times?
  10. What is the dominant emotion, or emotions that you feel, and where is that coming from?
